SpongeBob Helps Nitros Say Farewell to the School Year

Final outdoor rally of the year honors spring athletes, 2022 Teacher of the Year, and dance and cheer seniors!

On Friday, June 3rd, Glendale High School held its Farewell Rally at Moyse Stadium, and the theme of the rally was SpongeBob Squarepants. Leading up to this event, students participated in their final Spirit Week of the year. First was Tourist Tropical Tuesday, followed by Culture Wear Wednesday, Throwback Thursday, and Rally Friday, where students were encouraged to wear rally shirts or their class colors.

Similar to other rallies, the GHS drumline kicked off the event with their trombone stunts. The dance/drill team came up next and danced to songs featuring Doja Cat, Rihanna and Justin Bieber.

The first game of the rally was a jellyfish competition between the four classes. One hundred plastic balls, representing jellyfish, were scattered around the field and each class had to get as many as they could while only using a fish net.

Our spring senior athletes were also honored for the dedication that they’ve put into their sports over the past few years. The color guard team put on an astounding performance, and the cheer team performed for the last time with their two senior captains, Arpi Ghazaryan and Teni Asadourian. We also recognized the athletes who participated in the Powderpuff Football Game that was held later that evening.

Chef Monica Cuevas was named as the winner of the 2022 Olivia Macaulay Memorial Award, which is our school’s Teacher of the Year recognition. The other five finalists were Ms. Kristina Carbajal, Mr. Hezhu Gao, Mr. Peter Gebeshian, Mr. Chris O’Malley, and Ms. Sona Postajian

Even though Chef Cuevas will not be returning to GHS next year, we are so grateful to have had her here as a Nitro teacher. Officer Michelle Gonzalez also addressed the student body, as she will be retiring after six years of serving GHS as the school resource officer.

The Farewell Rally was not like our previous traditional events, but we are happy that we were able to hold our class yell off and the annual class transitions. Congratulations to our seniors for making it to the finish line, and we hope that all of our Nitro students have enjoyed all three rallies this year. We are hopeful that next year these events will be held in the gym as normal.

There is only one more week left of this school year. But before the year ends, we have a few more school events, such as the Senior Wrap Up on June 10th, the graduation ceremony on June 13th, and Grad Nite at Disneyland Resort on June 17th.
