So This Is Love, Elizabeth Lim

A twisted fairy tale that you shouldn’t miss

So This Is Love is a twisted fairy tale that looks at the classic story of Cinderella from another point of view. This novel is part of a series called Disney’s Twisted Tales, in which all of the novels are written by different authors.

This novel was published on April 7, 2020 by Elizabeth Lim, a New York resident and bestselling author of seven books, including The Blood of Stars duology, Six Crimson Cranes, Spin the Dawn, Unravel the Dusk, and Reflection.

People say that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but I sometimes do. I judged this book by its cover, because it appealed to me and convinced me to get the book and read it.

The first two chapters of the novel follow the Cinderella fairy tale, until it gets to the part where every girl in the town has to try on the glass slipper. Then the story you know turns around completely.

Cinderella leaves her own house and becomes homeless after having a fight with her stepmother. When she is just lying on the street, a woman who works for the prince finds her and takes her to the palace. She starts to work there until the second ball.

While reading this twisted tale, I understood that if two people are meant to be together, they will find each other at some point in their lives. If Cinderella went through all those hard times just to find her other half, then people can get through those times as well.

In the novel, we do not hear much from the stepmother and the stepsisters. However, the stepmother has a main part in the movie. Same with the prince.

In the novel, we hear more about the Grand Duke, also known as the King’s prim.

On the other hand, we have four new characters: Duchess Genevieve (the King’s sister and the Duchess of Orlanne), Lousia (who is this woman who helps Cinderella), Madame Irmina (Louisa’s aunt who is in charge of the palace seamstresses), and Mr. Laverre.

The reason that I like this novel, and I recommend people to read this book and the other Disney’s Twisted Tales, is because movies like Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin are a huge part of our childhood. The fact that someone thought about writing those fairy tales from another point of view is very interesting. People who think deeply will like these novels the most, because those kinds of people look at a situation in many different ways, and these novels are the meaning of thinking deeply. They twist the story to see what would happen if everything went differently.

The last parts that make these books very interesting are their cover and titles. The cover of the book is very dark and it shows a pair of the glass slippers that are broken. The title makes readers interested in reading the novel.

If you liked this novel, you will also like the other Twisted Tales, too, where authors take classic Disney stories and look at them from another point of view.

Also, please check out Melinda Khechumyan’s review of It Ends with Us by Colleen Hoover. That novel is terrific as well.

Linet Miankai, Staff Writer
Linet is a senior in Glendale High School. She is kinda boring (she is not) and she is not in any club or sport (BOO). Netflix, Disney+ , and her playlist hate her, because she is either watching movies or listening to music all day. You need to really know her to see her crazy side. She sometimes might be a weirdo but go off, I guess. People say she is popular at school, but if you ask her she will say that she is just well-known. Also, people know her as the weird-last-name-girl-that-nobody-can-pronounce.
