Whether you are from a low-income household or simply enjoy thrifting, the first floor of the 4000 Building may have something for you. Ms. Greta Sukazian has brought the Goodwill and the Salvation Army to Glendale High School, with her small but useful installation. Anything from sweaters to formal wear, and even shoes, can be found here if you have the time. Anyone is welcome to take a look during snack and lunch time in front of Room 4117.
For years now, on the first floor of the 4000 Building, one of our math teachers has been offering a wonderful resource. On the outside wall of Ms. Sukazian’s room, you can find a clothes rack with anything from dresses to suit jackets. Inside the entrance, you can also find various candles and accessories.
It all began just a few years ago after Ms. Sukazian’s daughter graduated from high school. “Her homecoming dress was hanging in her closet,” she recalled. “Since she didn’t want it anymore, I figured maybe someone in our school would want it.”
This collection of items is small, but it has made an impact. The main obstacle has been the location. “[I’m hoping] people could spread the word, since I’m downstairs on the bottom floor of 4000,” Ms. Sukazian said. “Many people don’t come this way. It’s so hidden that so many people don’t know about it.” She believes that this resource could be used and enjoyed by all of our Nitro students.
For those who don’t need this resource, or who don’t find joy in thrifting, they can always donate their old clothes and shoes. As long as these items are in good condition, and ideally washed, you can just leave them on an empty hanger on the rack.
This idea has promise, and if someone is dedicated to this cause, Ms. Sukazian is more than willing to serve as an advisor to a related club in the future. This operation could expand across campus, helping gain more funding, donations and opportunities to help others in our community.
Anyone is welcome to come and take a look at the available apparel every day during snack and lunch. Just be respectful, feel free to take a look, leave something or take something home. Anyone interested in taking a little initiative is also welcome to speak with Ms. Sukazian about turning this opportunity into a club.
Thrift away, Nitros!
