Haykoosh Affak is a junior at Glendale High School. She was born in the city of Damascus, Syria, and she arrived in the United States sixteen years ago. She has multiple hobbies, such as animating, drawing and hanging out with friends. She also enjoys playing Roblox and listening to the band called She Wants Revenge. And she has a cat named Zeitoun.
Haykoosh’s love for animating and drawing has led her to create the Comic Book Club at GHS. This club is for anyone who enjoys drawing and creating comics.
Haykoosh created the Comic Book Club near the end of the 2025 school year, so that she and her club members could relax and draw. As of now, they haven’t yet created any comics, but they are planning to do so later this year. Her favorite thing about comics is that people get to make their own stories and characters.
Haykoosh first got into comics when she first found out about webtoons and webcomics. Her favorite artists are Brian Lee O’Malley of the Scott Pilgrim series, Ethel Hays, who wrote the Flapper Fanny comic, and Simon Tofield, who wrote the Simon’s Cat comic book. She recommends that students check out these comic books, because she believes they are short and easy to read.
Although the Comic Book Club is a good addition to GHS, a potential problem they may face is ensuring that everyone is on the same page (no pun intended). Haykoosh plans to resolve this problem by asking everyone what they are working on at the beginning of every meeting.
Haykosh’s main goal for the Comic Book Club is to produce original comics. She and her members may work individually with their own art and creativity, or they can collaborate on a comic book by working together.
What Haykoosh enjoys most about being president of this club is having a place on campus where she can draw and create her own stories. However, there are some things she doesn’t like, such as forgetting some of the aspects of producing and creating quality comic books, as these elements are very important for her club members.
In the future, Haykoosh plans to produce original comics that are school-appropriate, with the main audience being our school community. She hopes that in the future her club will grow and continue to produce comic books.
