Southpaw, directed by Antoine Fuqua and released in 2015, is a boxing movie with dark, relationship drama. The main stars in the film are Jake Gyllenhaal, as Billy “The Great” Hope, and Miguel Gomez, as Miguel “Magic” Escobar. You can currently stream this film on Netflix. This is a really good movie, and I really enjoyed watching it. It just has some rough parts which are sad, but overall I really loved it.
Southpaw is about a boxer who is trying to get his life back on track, so that he can get custody of his daughter. He also wants to start things over with his career and take it more seriously. After everything that happens, it leads him on a wild path of destruction. He starts to ruin himself just to get better. He is rough on himself and pushes himself more than what he actually can do in his boxing career.
A good aspect of this movie is that all of the actors play their roles really well. I also think that they disappear into their characters. Throughout the whole movie, I was interested and couldn’t wait to see what was going to happen next to Billy. The way he would risk his life for the custody of his daughter is truly amazing.
It is also a really well-written script. However, something they could have improved in the movie is that they could have made it longer. The conclusion made me really happy, because it is a close decision.
The plot of the movie is very interesting. I was always very curious about what was going to happen next, like if he was going to win the boxing match or not. The movie has some interesting surprises throughout, but I am very satisfied with the ending. It is very surprising that it ends like that.
One issue that I have with the movie is Billy’s relationship with his wife, Maureen, who is played by Rachel McAdams. Billy is trying to get her back, and she tells him that if he doesn’t change, she won’t give him a chance. This character is so cruel, and gives up on Billy, and you end up not liking her as a character. Eventually, Maureen has a tragic accident, and it gives Billy’s quest for custody more urgency.
While each scene isn’t super long, the flow of this film is excellent. Every scene in this film is crucial to the larger plot, since it ties into everything that happens before and after.
Overall, this movie is definitely worth your time, and if you already have a Netflix account, you should check it out. The actors are amazing, and also if you are into sports, drama, action and thrills, I would really recommend this movie for you. This is a really enjoyable movie, and if you are into Southpaw, you might also want to check out Girlfight and The Boxer.
