New Girl

This American sitcom’s humor is underrated!
New+Girl

New Girl is an American sitcom, starring Zooey Deschanel, Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield, and Lamorne Morris. This sitcom aired on the Fox network from 2011 until 2018, when it was abruptly canceled. When the topic of sitcoms is discussed, people always bring up Friends or The Office, but people just don’t talk enough about New Girl

The show starts off with a woman named Jess, who needs a new place to stay after her boyfriend cheats on her. She then finds an ad on Craigslist for a vacancy at an LA loft with three male roommates: Schmidt, Nick, and Winston. Right off the bat, the dynamic between these four characters is hilarious. The humor in the pilot episode may be a little hard to get into at first, but the rest of the series is a breeze.

Jess is an awkward schoolteacher, Nick is a self-proclaimed writer, Schmidt is a terrible businessman, and Winston is a funny sweetheart. What’s not to love here?

The relationship between the characters is the best part of the show. You get sweet and heartfelt moments, as well as moments so funny that it will be hard for you to breathe. The actors have great chemistry, and they play their characters so well that it’s hard to believe they’re not all like these people in real life.

Zooey Deschanel, in the title character role, does a wonderful job at playing that “awkward girl.” The way she delivers her lines is very skillful, and she has amazing chemistry with her love interest Nick, played by Jake Johnson. Nick and Jess’s burgeoning relationship is one of the best storylines in the series, and watching their slowburn pan out into a love story is very entertaining.

Schmidt, played by Max Greenfield, and Winston, played by Lamorne Morris, have one of the best dynamics as well. Their jokes play off of each other very well, especially in Seasons 2 and 4.

The writing on this show is dependably hilarious, and the actors’ comedic timing is impeccable. The series is unique, in that the energy of each episode just doesn’t feel like any other sitcom .The simplicity of each script works best with the style of the show.

Seasons 2, 3, and 4 are the best of the series, but the entire show is entertaining to watch. However, it is clear that Season 7 was a very rushed season, as it only has 8 episodes, as opposed to the typical 22 episodes of all the other seasons.

The show was canceled by Fox after Season 6, but they wanted to close the show off properly. I guess an awkward season is better than nothing, right?

If you haven’t already watched this sitcom, I highly suggest that you do. And if you already have, I also recommend watching Abbott Elementary. New Girl is available to stream now on Netflix, and it is an absolute must-watch!
