On Thursday, January 20, our GHS girls varsity basketball team played against the longtime rival of GHS, the Tornadoes of Hoover High School. Overall, it looked like an easy game for the Nitros, as they stayed in the lead for the entire game, and won with a final score of 51 to 24.
The starting lineup included Erica Labo (#2), Toni Gesmundo (#25), Jane Bassil (#23), Sarine Kaloghlian (#20), and Cherilyn Legaspi (#15).
The girls immediately took the lead, with Legaspi scoring the first basket, followed by a 3-pointer by Gesmundo. Our Nitros continued to play well throughout the second quarter, with Legaspi scoring again with just 10 seconds left before half-time, bringing the score to 19 to 14.
The Nitro team started rapidly increasing its lead in the second half of the game, as Legaspi scored three baskets in a row in just the first few minutes of the third quarter.
Hoover struggled in the fourth quarter, as Kaloghlian and Bassil scored the first two shots of the period, expanding the lead on the Tornadoes. The game concluded with a 27-point win, a considerable victory for GHS.
Although this was a long-awaited game for many, no spectators were allowed because of the new COVID-19 restrictions. This game was initially scheduled for January 7th, but was canceled and rescheduled. Our boys varsity basketball team is scheduled to play against Hoover on Friday, January 28th.
