Avatar: Fire and Ash, directed by James Cameron, is a sci-fi action film starring Sam Worthington as Jake Sully, Zoe Saldaña as Neytiri, Stephen Lang as Quaritch, and Oona Chaplin as Varang. Fire and Ash is the third movie in the Avatar series, following Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water. You can stream this movie now!
The first Avatar movie takes place in the year 2154 and follows Jake’s journey to become a Na’vi and explore the moon of Pandora. We see him meet Neytiri and connect with the Na’vi, who are at war against humans, or the sky people, who are trying to invade their planet. The Na’vi end up victorious in the war, with Jake’s help, and drive the sky people out of Pandora
Fast forward to fifteen years later to Avatar: The Way of Water, and Jake and Neytiri have already formed a family and are living peacefully within the forests of Pandora. Suddenly, the sky people return and threaten Jake and his family, so they have no choice but to leave the forest and move to the shore to live with the water clan, the Metkayina. They learn how to swim and connect with the sea creatures, but the sky people will not rest until they find them.
One human by the name of Quaritch, who is in charge of the mission, is determined to find Jake Sully, who is considered a traitor to the human race. Another war breaks out, and Jake leads all of the clans to victory as Toruk Makto.
Avatar: Fire and Ash takes place almost immediately after the end of The Way of Water. In this film, we meet a new group of Na’vi, the Mangkwan Clan, also known as the ash people, and their leader, Varang. Jake and his family still reside on the seashore, hiding from any sky people out to get them. Later on, conflict arises as the Mangkwan people attack the other clans and Jake’s family. We see lots of subplots throughout this movie, and many characters’ journeys to discovering their true selves.
As expected, the visual effects and cinematography in this movie are phenomenal. James Cameron is an absolute genius, and every Avatar film is so well thought out and beautifully executed, even to the tiniest details. I especially appreciate this movie for its attention to detail, such as the ash people’s scars and how they cover the natural marks given to them by Eywa, since they do not believe in her.
Avatar: Fire and Ash only came out in December and it has already won an Academy Award, a Critics’ Choice Award, a BAFTA Award, and a Satellite Award for best visual effects. It was also listed as one of the AFI Movies of the Year.
Overall, this film is very much worth watching. Filled with emotions, comedy, action, and just visually beautiful scenes, this movie checks off every box on the list. Especially if you enjoy science fiction and fantasy films, this is the one for you.
If you haven’t done so already, make sure to check out the first two movies as well to get the full Avatar experience. Movies similar to this one include Mercy, Jurassic World, and Anaconda.
