Wuthering Heights, released on a Friday the 13th, and also the day before Valentine’s Day, is based on the classic dark romance novel by Emily Brontë. It stars iconic actors, like Jacob Elordi as Heathcliff and Margot Robbie as Catherine.
This movie has beautiful cinematography. There are weird clips, like Catherine sticking a finger inside a fish’s mouth that is inside gelatine. But it also includes beautiful scenes, like the one of Catherine walking in her wedding dress and veil on a windy hilltop.
Some of the visuals in the film are particularly striking. The house that Catherine lived in as a child, and then the house she eventually moves into, has walls painted the same color as her skin. The rain and the hills are the perfect environment in which to place this kind of story. It is all so gloomy and dark, just like it was intended to be.
Human emotions are also very well represented in this film. Even the child actors who play the younger versions of Catherine and Heathcliff, Charlotte Mellington and Owen Cooper respectively, show anger and deep affection in a very realistic way.
Regardless of what most people think, Jacob Elordi plays the role of Heathcliff pretty well. His acting is very well done and represents the character in a unique way that has never been seen before. The reason why people are criticizing his performance in this movie is just because there is a trend going around to hate on him for his past roles. He is also appearing in a lot of movies nowadays, but you could say the same for Timothée Chalamet.
I enjoyed the storyline of the film, and I like how both Catherine and Heathcliff aren’t perfect by any means. The struggle they both endure, contrasted with their unconditional love for each other, is what makes this story special.
However, I am not a fan of the music in this movie. I wish it had been more classic, traditional music. It would’ve matched better with the time period of the movie, rather than the Charli XCX music they play in the background of each scene.
Since the story of this film is based off of a novel, there’s not much to judge except the story itself. It isn’t a happy romantic movie, if that is what you are looking for. It’s a dark romance, with themes including death and gambling addiction. It is a pretty messed up film, but that’s what makes it so intriguing to watch.
The book itself isn’t so easy to understand or follow, so this movie does a great job of breaking it down visually, for us to better understand the story of Wuthering Heights. The visuals help a lot with following this particular story.
Although this book isn’t a typical classic novel, it has parts written in it that weren’t socially acceptable in the 1800’s. This R-rated movie is also not recommended for children younger than 17. So if that isn’t your cup of tea, I recommend not watching this movie.
Overall, this film is enjoyable for those who don’t mind dark romances with unhappy endings. Just the cinematography on its own, without a story attached, would make it a great film. It is all tastefully done, except for the music, so it’s definitely worth checking out if you need a good film to watch.
