Sofia Gomez-Hernandez is a junior at Glendale High School, and she is the president of the Help the Youth Club. Some of her hobbies include martial arts, dancing, playing piano, listening to music and going on nature walks. These hobbies have allowed her to have a healthy balance for school-related stress. Balancing sports, school, and her personal life has allowed her to learn to prioritize tasks and manage her time wisely.
The Help the Youth Club focuses on mentoring young people, especially middle and elementary school students. According to Sofia, the club “focuses on providing opportunities for Glendale High School students and allows them to succeed in any way they choose to make an impact in their community.”
Currently, club members are volunteering during homework labs at Roosevelt Middle School on Thursdays, where they help students with their homework and studying. Sofia hopes that the club continues to provide consistent support and help students navigate the challenges that may come their way.

Sofia knows she is able to teach people, making her a strong leader. The most rewarding thing about being a club president is that she has formed deep connections with both her members and the middle school students they are mentoring. She believes that this is a very rewarding experience, allowing her to expand her interests and learn through teaching others.
But Sofia admitted that she has faced some difficulties along the way. “The most challenging part of being president is learning how to manage a club, organizing events and planning the tutoring events with other schools,” she said. In the future, Sofia plans to better train her club members to ensure high-quality tutoring. She wants these tutors to maximize a consistent academic impact for the students.
Although she noted that many students are not interested in tutoring others, Sofia hopes to remind everyone of the benefits of helping their community, including earning community service hours, gaining valuable leadership skills and receiving professional development.
This club allows students to connect with different people, and it forces students to develop their abilities in teaching and helping others. For those students who are interested in finding other ways to help in their community, this is the perfect club for them!
