Destiny Velina is a senior at Glendale High School, and she is currently serving as our Spanish Club president. In her free time, she enjoys listening to music, playing games and spending time with her friends.
Destiny first joined the Spanish Club this school year. Since last year’s cabinet members all graduated, the club was disbanded, because it was mostly seniors that ran the club. This year, Destiny was looking forward to starting a new club, and she decided that she would restart the Spanish Club once again.
Destiny’s main goal as president was to have students know basic information and raise awareness about immigration enforcement, and by having this club, it was the perfect opportunity to do so. This club also allows students to learn more about the different Latino cultures.

One of Destiny’s favorite things about being a club president is seeing everyone in the club become better friends. She said, “I really love that everyone gets closer together when you’re working on something.”
Destiny is also currently a part of ASB, but she isn’t often in charge of a specific activity on campus. Serving as president of the Spanish Club allows Destiny to make a bigger impact on our school. “It gives me a leadership role,” she said. “Talking to everyone, seeing if they’re good with doing things like fundraisers, and then making other plans we may have in the future.”
Destiny made her decision to join ASB when she was in eighth grade at Roosevelt Middle School, and ever since then, she felt like she loved being involved in school activities. She decided that she was going to continue on with ASB the rest of her high school years, but when she hit freshman year, there wasn’t enough space for her.
Thankfully, she was able to join ASB during her sophomore year, and since then, Destiny has been a part of the team. She currently has the role of the secretary for the third-period ASB class.
And if this wasn’t enough, Destiny is also a part of our Nitro softball team, and she has been playing the sport since she was five years old. Destiny enjoyed playing softball when she was younger, but then COVID hit, and she wasn’t able to play during that time. However, she got back into softball during her freshman year.
Destiny currently plays centerfield and catcher for our team, and she’s been a catcher for about three years now. Since she is a senior with a lot of experience, she says that softball allows her to take on another leadership role, by helping out the girls who are new to the sport.
“I enjoy teaching the new girls, and I’ve never done that before,” she admitted. “It’s nice to teach them things. Like they get frustrated now and then. And because I get frustrated a lot, too, I can tell them, ‘Oh, don’t get frustrated,’ or ‘Just have fun,’ and stuff like that.”
“Not every game is about whether you win or not,” Destiny added.
Destiny’s favorite thing about being a senior is meeting new people and being able to become friends with her younger classmates, especially because she is a part of Nitro Crew. She is also a two-year member of Nitro Press, where she is in her second year as a part of our yearbook staff and has written several articles for the Explosion website.
