Hayk Yesayan is our freshman class president, and Maddy Galdamez is our freshman vice president. Outside of ASB, Hayk is a part of the GHS boys water polo team, and Maddy is a part of the girls lacrosse team and the Best Buddies Club.
Maddy has been in leadership organisations since she was in the third grade, and Hayk has been a part of ASB ever since he was a seventh grader. Both of these amazing freshmen representatives have been in classes similar to ASB for quite some time now, and they are both great leaders.
Hayk and Maddy both agree that their favourite thing about being in ASB is the school spirit it brings. Maddy said, “I like having school spirit…I hate [it when people] don’t have school spirit, because we should be excited to be here.”
Hayk’s responsibilities as the freshman class president include planning meetings, organising events, assigning roles to everyone, assisting commissioners, and keeping track of everything. Maddy’s role as the freshman class vice president includes helping out with the meetings and with social media. Maddy runs the GHS Class of 2029 Instagram page and the GHS29 scrapbook page, but her main purpose as the freshman vice president is to plan Oratorical, which is coming at the end of next month.
When there is a disagreement within the class council team, Hayk and Maddy try to hear everyone out and understand everyone’s point of view, because sometimes meetings get out of hand. They both agree that when there is a disagreement, everyone should stand up for what they think is right, but at the same time, they should try being kinder.
Hayk thinks that being kind and polite are very important traits to have in ASB, because politeness is key to communicating effectively. Whether it’s addressing a concern, offering feedback, or promoting an event, it always helps to be good-natured. Maddy believes that the most important trait to have is enthusiasm for school events.
Our two freshman representatives would love to stay in ASB for all of their remaining years here at GHS, and Maddy would like to even continue being a part of student government in college. Once Maddy graduates from high school, she plans on going to a four-year college and studying either political science or public policy, so that one day she can be the California Governor. Hayk also plans on going to a four-year college and would like to still do water polo at the next level.
All freshmen are welcome to attend class council meetings, which are held every Tuesday at lunch in Mr. O’Malley’s Room 4411, and you can follow their two Instagram accounts: @glendalehigh.2029 and @ghs29.scrapbook. And if you would like to be a part of next year’s ASB class, please see Mr. Livingston in Room 6202.
