Sofia Orellana is a senior at Glendale High School and has served as our Model UN president for three years. She has also recently started the Saints in Action Club here on campus. In addition to being the president of these clubs, she is also our head cheer captain, our ASB Vice President, and the secretary of the Dynamiters Do Gooders Club.
Sofia has been the president of the Model UN Club since her sophomore year. “I’m happy I’ve been able to get a good chunk of interested kids,” she said. “We’ve been able to talk about a lot of political stuff, as well as climate change.”
Sofia has participated in many debates during her meetings, and if you’re not familiar with Model UN, it’s a club that simulates the United Nations. It’s a perfect club for you if you’re interested in world politics.
In the future, Sofia hopes that she can have community service opportunities that involve political demonstrations, especially with the current state of the United States right now. She’s also looking into having conferences for her club members to participate in. This club is especially important to Sofia, because it shows that people anywhere in the world can make a difference just by speaking up and bringing their ideas to the table.
Sofia is also the president of Saints in Action, a club she formed this year, inspired by her Catholic faith. “I got confirmed during my sophomore year, and I got closer to my religion,” she said. “And I wanted to bring a community together.”
She also says that she noticed there have been Christian clubs on campus, but not a specifically Catholic one. She also wanted to meet new people who were also interested in the club and passionate about growing in their faith.
In the future, Sofia hopes to organize mini retreats and engage in community service opportunities, especially at her local church. This club means a lot to Sofia, because her religion is very important to her and has taught her about herself and her progress in life. She especially wants people to unite the community and connect spiritually with their faith.
Model UN looks great on college applications, especially if you are planning a career in politics, and it helps improve your public speaking skills. And if you’re interested in exploring your faith, consider joining Saints in Action.
