Glendale High School senior Ellen Abramyan has become an active and confident leader on campus after joining several clubs, making strong friendships, and finding teachers who inspired her. Ellen came to GHS looking for a diverse community, and the school quickly became a place where she discovered her passions.
This year, she became the president of the Armenian Club. She also has many interests outside of school, including painting with watercolors or oil pastels, which helps her relax.
Ellen says that AP Calculus BC is her favorite class, because the small group and Ms. Morrison’s teaching make math exciting every day. As a future math major, Ellen loves seeing how math connects to art, music, physics and nature.
The Armenian Club has played a big role in Ellen’s high school experience. After seeing the Armenian Genocide Remembrance Assembly during her freshman year, she felt encouraged to join and become more involved in her culture. Elen’s favorite project so far has been creating presentations for Armenian Heritage Month, where she shared Armenia’s history, traditions, and strong spirit with classmates.
The Armenian Club recently sponsored a fundraiser through TUMO, which is “a non-profit organization dedicated to expanding access to free education in technology, photography, robotics, computer science, and much more to all teens across Armenia.” Ellen is interested in helping to build a new school in Syunik, a city on the border of Azerbaijan, where there are many violent conflicts. “They’ll need all the help they can get, so we are grateful for donations of any size,” she said.
Ellen is also an active member of MESA, a club that lets students explore math, science, and engineering through hands-on projects. In MESA Club, she has helped create 3D-printed keychains and is excited for future engineering challenges. MESA has also helped Ellen build friendships with students who share similar interests.
Balancing school and activities can be tough, but Ellen stays organized using Pomodoro timers and Post-It notes. Even with a busy schedule, taking care of her well-being remains important to her.
Ellen’s journey at GHS shows how getting involved, staying curious, and embracing new opportunities can shape a student’s entire high school experience. Her growth and passion continue to make a positive impact on the GHS community.
