Weightlifting Club president Anthony Alfaro wants everybody to get those gains! He might be one of the busiest people on campus, but he always finds ways to spend time with his friends, expand his music taste and hit the gym, which might as well be his second home.
After Breanna Cuellar graduated and stepped down as Weightlifting Club president last year, Anthony was asked about taking over her role as head of the club. After much thought, Anthony realized it “was more than just another commitment; it was a chance to lead something” he was passionate about.
By taking on the full responsibility of club president, Anthony learned it was more than just about lifting weights, but instead this club is “about building confidence, discipline, and mental resilience.” Anthony noted that he and his club members are even pushing for a partnership with the YMCA, to offer volunteer opportunities and other “special privileges.”
During club meetings, Anthony and his cabinet members like to come together and set plans throughout the year. They also brainstorm to come up with ways to be more inclusive and engaging and, most importantly, they look for ways to improve both their physical and mental health.
Being the head of a club means reshaping it into your own image. Anthony makes it a clear point that all levels are welcome to be a part of the Weightlifting Club. “You don’t have to be an experienced lifter to join,” Anthony claimed. “The club is open to everyone, from complete beginners to advanced athletes.” And what matters most to Anthony is a person’s willingness to learn and grow, not only in the gym but also in their mental well-being, which is something he feels is crucial for students today.
Consequently, Anthony hopes that students learn that nobody can push them as hard as they can push themselves. The Weightlifting Club prides itself on teaching people about self-confidence and discipline.
Anthony’s overarching goal across his senior year is to create a lasting legacy with this organization. He plans to leave behind something that future club presidents can continue to build on, as he did with the club that Breanna Cuellar left for him. This is why he is pushing so hard for a partnership with the YMCA, which he hopes will open doors to greater opportunities.
Anthony and his club leadership are dedicated to expanding this club into something great, year-by-year. Additionally, they are committed to ensuring that the core principles of the club stay in place for years to come, keeping new ideas flowing and maintaining a positive community where everybody feels welcome.
