Elvis Presley is largely considered to be the King of Rock and Roll, one of the most famous singers of the past century. He was also married to his beloved Priscilla Presley. But was their romanticized relationship really all sunshine and rainbows?
Priscillia was directed by Sofia Coppola, and it was released by A24 films in October of 2023. (A fun fact about the movie is that it was all made in a month!)
This film follows Priscilla Presley’s relationship with Elvis, starting from when she was just a young teenager. It gives us a look into how Priscilla and Elvis met and how they felt for and treated one another. It also offers us a new opinion-altering perspective on who Elvis Presley really was.
The film starts off with a 14-year-old Priscilla being given the opportunity to meet the already popular star, Elvis. She ultimately accepts the offer and attends one of his parties. Both of them end up bonding over the fact that they are homesick and miss the U.S, because during this time Elvis is stationed in Germany as a soldier for the army, and Priscilla’s father is an Air Force officer. Eventually, Elvis leaves Germany to pursue his singing and acting career, and three years later, he brings Priscilla with him to Graceland.
Personally, I love this movie. The cinematography is beautiful and Cailee Spaeny, who plays the title role, looks almost identical to Priscilla. Jacob Elordi, who portrays Elvis, also fits into his role perfectly.
I feel that this movie has changed my outlook on life.
Although it may seem boring at first, and it has an overall lack of dialogue, this movie was written that way on purpose, because that’s genuinely how Priscilla’s life was. Her life may have seemed euphoric, but in reality she experienced loneliness and a lack of communication with her husband.
What’s worse is that Priscilla went through all of this during her teenage years. Basically, she was experiencing this loneliness from when she was an adolescent, up until she divorced Elvis in October, 1973.
Overall, Priscilla is definitely a must-watch, especially if you love Elvis Presley and are obsessed with the aesthetics of the 1960’s and 70’s. This is an iconic movie, and it allows us to take an interesting look into the romanticized and misunderstood relationship between Priscilla and The King.
