Jayden Escobar is a sophomore at Glendale High School, and he is currently a captain on the GHS dance team. He was born in Glendale and joined the dance team during his freshman year.
Jayden is currently in his second year here at GHS, and in his free time, he likes to play video games and hang out with his friends. He likes to skate a lot and learn new things. Dance has always been a part of his life and he loves it a lot.
What got you into dancing?
What inspired me to dance was watching my parents when I was little. My dad really was one of my biggest inspirations to start dancing.
Did you ever imagine becoming one of the captains, just as a sophomore?
I did not think I would become a captain. I was just having fun, not knowing that it would lead to a bigger role on the team as a sophomore.
What experience do you have in leading a team of people?
I had some experience when I would train doing martial arts. I was usually in charge of the little kids, and that’s what taught me to be a leader.
How do you maintain an effective chain of command on the team?
It’s important that the whole team is all on the same page, and I try to keep everyone together.
How would you handle a situation where two members of the team are having a disagreement?
If there is a disagreement, communication is key… Being in a disagreement affects the team when we are competing. We all have to work together.
How do you manage your time with dance, school and your outside life?
I manage my time with the team… when I have down time. When I don’t have competition or practice, I take the time to catch up with school, friends and family.
How do you keep your confidence and consistency as a captain and the leader of such a big group?
When it comes to confidence and consistency with a big group, it all goes down to how much we practice and the bond we all have with each other.
