Do you ever wonder what life would be if animals were in human bodies?
BoJack Horseman was released in August of 2014, and it is still streaming today on Netflix. It is an American animated-comedy-drama-sitcom, created by Raphael Bob-Waksberg. The show normalizes the regular, everyday life of animals with human bodies.
BoJack Horseman, the title character, is portrayed by Will Arnett. Other star voices that play a big part in BoJack’s life are Aaron Paul as Todd Chavez, Alison Brie as Diane Nguyen, Amy Sedaris as Princess Carolyn, and Paul F. Tompkins as Mr. Peanutbutter.
This show has received overwhelmingly positive reviews, and I personally enjoy watching it. It’s filled with humor and thrills, but it also addresses reality.
This series revolves around a horse named BoJack, who is basically a celebrity. He is wanting to make a big comeback after the show he starred in, Horsin’ Around, has been off the air for several years. During the first episode, we are introduced to the major characters of the show, and they all play different roles in BoJack’s life, as his writer, roommate, agent, and frenemy.
You may think these characters just work for BoJack, or don’t care for him, since he comes off as such a selfish, bitter horse. But, trust me when I say that these characters are his closest friends, and they all have strong relationships with him.
Personally, a top character on my list is Mr. Peanutbutter. This character is introduced as another famous TV star, who is not only BoJack’s friend, but also his former rival. Although BoJack doesn’t like Mr. Peanutbutter very much, they both in fact have a lot in common, especially based on their narcissism. My favorite part about Mr. Peanutbutter’s character is his humor, and how loving and clueless he can be.
Another character that just holds the show together is Diane Nguyen, who is known as BoJack’s ghostwriter. She and BoJack are sort of drawn to each other, and they grow very close, with romantic feelings thrown in. Diane is an intelligent, opinionated, introverted woman. She’s never afraid to speak up when something needs to be addressed, and that’s why I really like her character.
Before watching BoJack Horseman, I thought this show was going to be a regular cartoon with lots of funny moments. But this show is more than that. The plot takes real, everyday world struggles, but mixes them with humor for balance.
One very captivating episode is “Escape From L.A.”, which is the eleventh episode of Season 2. During this episode, BoJack decides to take a break from his Hollywood life, and he drives down to New Mexico to visit an old friend.
When he gets there, Bojack learns new information about his friend and how she has built a new life for herself. BoJack eventually makes a concerning life mistake, where he now has to live with it as a daily reminder. I don’t want to give anything else away, but make sure that you go watch this episode!
BoJack has grown up independent, since his parents were very neglectful of him as a child. In the episode “The Old Sugarman Place” from Season 4, he finds his grandparent’s home, and he continues to stay there for a while. During this time, BoJack is haunted by memories of when he was a kid visiting the house. Here we get to learn more about BoJack’s background and why he is the way he is.
Now, let me tell you about one of the funniest episodes in the show: “Our A-Story Is A ‘D’ Story”, the sixth episode of Season 1. This episode starts off with BoJack stealing the letter “D” off the Hollywood Sign, in order to impress Diane. The funniest part is when Todd, BoJack’s roommate, winds up in jail and has to deal with his jail mates. In the end, the “D” is returned, and Todd is released, but the process of getting to this point is absolutely hilarious.
No doubt, I would recommend that you watch BoJack Horseman. I personally think it’s a funny, interesting show to watch when you’re bored, or when you just want something to play in the background.
The series has six seasons, which are all great. The episodes never fail to make me laugh, but each one also has a good story. Check out this show for yourself and have a look. It’s streaming today on Netflix.
Keep horsin’ around, Nitros!
