Heartstopper was first released on April 22, 2022, and Season 2 is now available on Netflix!
Heartstopper was first a series of graphic novels by Alice Oseman, who also wrote the show. The cast and directors have been teasing Season Two for the longest time. We even got to see some sneak peaks on the Heartstopper Instagram, when they were filming these new episodes in France.
But now that Season 2 is officially out, it’s overall a little disappointing.
Now, if you’re going into Season 2, thinking that everything will turn out perfectly, think again. (It would be a boring show if it did.)
There are so many twists and turns in this season, as we get more into depth of the side stories. No one could’ve been prepared for this heartstopping season!
As we left off in Season 1, Episode 8, titled “Boyfriend,” Nick and Charlie are now official, Tao and Elle have some tension, and the big question of “Nick coming out or not” is torturing him.
As we get into Season 2, we see how supportive Charlie is throughout Nick’s whole journey of figuring out his sexuality. The one thing Charlie doesn’t want Nick to experience is the bullying that he personally received from all the guys at Truham Grammar School.
At the same time, Nick doesn’t want to be like Charlie’s ex, Ben, who chose not to come out or be seen with Charlie. We see this internal struggle between both of them during their school trip to Paris, where a few other stories are developed.
Paris. It’s where everything happens. But I don’t want to say too much.
Compared to Season 1, these new episodes are tremendously messy. Don’t get me wrong: the cliffhanger from Season 1 made fans want to watch Season 2, but the show runners could have executed it differently.
There are many side plots started in these episodes, but really only a few of them come to a resolution. For instance, we see how Tara and Darcy resolve some of their relationship issues and how Nick finally comes out.
But there are many more side plots started, and then linger on forever, throughout the season. Tao and Elle are an example of this, because they are together, but then not, and then the side plot is forgotten for a bit, and then it’s brought back again. It is just overall confusing, and the numerous side plots ultimately create an overwhelming feeling for the viewer. And not in a good way.
With Charlie and Nick being finally together, we do see them kissing… but maybe it’s a little too much. If you remember from Season 1, it was so exciting to finally see their first kiss happen. But now in Season 2, they should’ve cut back on the PDA.
There is not one episode that doesn’t have Nick and Charlie kissing or making out. Even in Episode 1, the first minute or so they are kissing in the closet at school. This makes another reason why it is difficult to watch this show at times.
This season is definitely intriguing, but not as amazing as we all thought it would be. It’s all so messy, and it most definitely misses the spark that was in Season 1.
Overall, Season 2 of Heartstopper is just okay. It was definitely exciting to watch these episodes after such a long wait, but they don’t capture that same alluring feeling after each surprising moment.
Now that we’re done with one heartstopping wait, it’s time for another one.
