The movie She’s the Man may have come out twenty years ago, but it remains one of the most memorable teen comedies of its time. With its clever humor, entertaining plot and unforgettable performances, the film continues to stand out.
With Amanda Bynes’ standout role to Channing Tatum’s early screen appearance, this is truly one of my favorite movies of all time. Watching this romance-comedy has become one of my comfort activities.
Amanda Bynes, plays the role of Viola, who pretends to be her own brother in order to be a part of the boys soccer team. Her character stands out with the passion for soccer as a teenage girl.
While she is disguised as her brother, Viola falls in love with her roommate, Duke, who is played by Channing Tatum. The movie uses humor and storytelling to grab the attention of anyone who is watching. Viola faces difficulties because of her hidden identity, and she has to overcome them, while keeping the story easy to follow.
Many people may not know, but this movie is actually based on Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, which is about a young woman who survives a shipwreck and disguises herself as a man named Cesario. This changing of identity leads to many funny and unexpected situations, just like it does in She’s the Man.
Amanda Bynes and Channing Tatum have an amazing bond and chemistry as Duke and Viola. They both have so much charm and confidence, making their characters more memorable.
While Tatum has continued to pursue an acting career to this day, Bynes has had a devastating career change. She served as the face of Nickelodeon for several years, but being every 2000s kid’s favorite actor had its own downside. It’s hard not to look back at her time at Nickelodeon and question how the environment there may have affected her.
As portrayed in documentaries like Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV, many former child actors and viewers have criticized the network, and especially producer Dan Schneider, for creating intense working conditions that may not have supported the long-term well-being of its young stars. While nothing can fully explain what Amanda Bynes has gone through, it’s hard to ignore how sudden fame, pressure, and a lack of protection for child actors can cause serious harm. But seeing how successful and joyful Bynes once seemed, specifically in She’s the Man, makes her struggles today even more heartbreaking, and it raises important questions about how young performers are treated in the entertainment industry today.
Despite the difficulties she is facing now, Amanda Bynes is brilliant in She’s the Man, and this movie is perfect for a casual movie night with friends and family. It is worth watching multiple times, even years later!
