The Housemaid is a 2025 psychological drama and thriller movie, directed and produced by Paul Feig. Sydney Sweeney plays Millie Calloway, a housemaid with a criminal record; Amanda Seyfried plays Nina Winchester, a wealthy woman who employs Millie; Brandon Sklenar plays Andrew Winchester, Nina’s husband; and Michele Morrone plays Enzo Accardi, an Italian groundskeeper.
This movie follows Millie, who was in prison for about ten years because of an incident that occurred for her back in high school. After she is released, she is in desperate need of a job, so she decides to become a housemaid. That is when she has the chance to be interviewed by the Winchesters, a well-known, wealthy family living in Long Island.
Eventually, Millie receives a call from Nina, informing her that she has been hired and requesting that she begin work right away. Millie feels welcomed by Nina when she first arrives at the house, especially since she has a whole room to herself—it is an upstairs attic rather than a master bedroom. Millie’s duties include cleaning the house, doing errands, preparing meals and caring for Nina and Andrew’s daughter, Cecelia “Cece” Winchester, who is portrayed by Indiana Elle.
However, Nina eventually starts to show signs of a severe mental illness and puts her in spontaneous situations, making Millie second-guess the decisions she makes every single day. One day, Nina is appreciating Millie being present and assisting her in any care she needs, but the next day she is arguing with her about certain tasks she completes and questioning her intentions. Millie initially believes that this is all typical behavior for a young mother, but she soon begins to doubt everything she previously believed, particularly regarding Nina and her motivations.
You will never feel bored at any point during this movie. It always feels like a jump scare is just about to happen. Every scene builds up suspense about each of the characters, and we see how their own problems add to the tension.
Like why is Nina Winchester acting so strangely to her own housemaid Millie? Is she hiding something?
The entire cast does a wonderful job of their acting, especially Amanda Seyfried. She showcases multiple emotions throughout this movie, going from thrilled to calm to frustrated. And I do believe that they did a great job with the casting, as each actor fits so well with the characters they play.
Another interesting fact is that this movie is based on The Housemaid book series by the author of Freida McFadden. The first book was released in 2022, and I hadn’t intended to read it, but after watching this movie, I felt like wow, I had to give it a try!
The book is really good, too, and I recommend it to everyone. Even though I read the book after watching the movie, against everyone’s advice, I wanted to be shocked in the theatre and not know what was going to happen next.
Ultimately, this is a must-see movie that you need to watch, without hesitation. It is still in theaters, so don’t waste your time: go and watch it immediately.
And if you still haven’t read the book series yet, I recommend you do that, too. Because soon there will be a second Housemaid movie, possibly coming later in 2026.
