Black Phone 2, was directed by Scott Derrickson and written by Derrickson, Joe Hill and C. Robert Cargill, It stars Ethan Hawke as The Grabber, Mason Thames as Finn, and Madeleine McGraw as Gwen. Overall, this is a great movie, and I recommend it for all horror fans.
The main plot of Black Phone 2 revolves around Gwen, who is having more dreams than she already has, and she and her brother go to the same camp that their mother attended years ago. What they don’t know is that this is all a trap to lure them to The Grabber. Even though The Grabber was killed in the previous movie, he has a plan for getting revenge on Finn.
I recommend that people watch this movie, because not only does it continue from the first movie, but it’s a different backstory we haven’t heard before. We also get introduced to new characters in this movie, and we learn more about them over the course of the story. Also, we get to see The Grabber’s new plan for Finn and Gwen, and we also see how they react to things that are weird to them.
Black Phone 2 is easy to follow, especially if you have watched the original movie, and you should definitely watch that movie first. When Black Phone 2 was released, most people like me said that the story was over after the death of The Grabber, but the phone rings again, and he comes back for revenge.
In this sequel, something that doesn’t make sense is that Gwen’s friend Ernesto always tags along with them. The story is also predictable, especially with how The Grabber has come back, but there are many surprises with how he kills his victims. At the end of the movie, it is satisfying to see how Finn and Gwen put everything back in place, and we find out what happened to their mother.
The actors in this movie are amazing, and they all go into their characters like they’re living in the roles they’re playing. Throughout the movie, Mason Thames and Madeleine McGraw disappear into their characters, as if they are truly those people in real life. There is also a strong chemistry between Gwen and Ernesto, but since Gwen’s brother Finn is there, it’s awkward for them.
The filmmaking of Black Phone 2 is fine, but some scenes go on so long that they will make people who are watching the movie get bored, like the scene where Gwen is having dreams of boys underwater. But these scenes do not ruin the movie itself.
While The Black Phone is a straight horror movie, Black Phone 2 includes some moments of comedy in it as well. In particular, there is a scene in the cabin with Finn and Gwen that made me laugh out loud.
If you haven’t already done so, I recommend that all readers watch The Black Phone and then check out Black Phone 2 afterwards. It’s a great sequel, but make sure that you don’t answer the phone!
