WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD!
Young Sheldon is an American sitcom series that is a spinoff of the show The Big Bang Theory. It follows the life of Sheldon (played by Ian Armitage) and his family members, and it takes place in Texas from the late 1980’s through the early 1990’s. This CBS series ran for seven seasons, from 2017 to 2024, and the final season of the show is definitely worth watching.
Sheldon is a kid genius, but he has many quirks about him, and his family never understands him. Sheldon has always been told that he is smart and unique, so he holds himself in high regard, and he considers himself to be better than everybody else, especially his family members.
Sheldon seems like he doesn’t care about his family, but later in Season 7 of the series, when his father, George, passes away, he shows his true emotions for them. He is not an emotional person, and he is usually purely logical, so to see this side of him is pretty rare. It shows that he has true emotional feelings when it comes to the people he loves.
Sheldon mostly only tries to help himself and doesn’t care much about helping others. But we see in Season 7 that he is more than happy to help his grandmother in court when she is charged with running an illegal casino, and he does this by studying law books. Again, when it comes to his family, he shows how much he really does care for them deep down.
The next character who undergoes a lot of character development in this final season is Sheldon’s older brother, Georgie (played by Montana Jordan). Georgie drops out of high school and even becomes a teenage father. In Season 7, we finally see him take responsibility for everything in his life.
Georgie learns how to speak in a more grammatically correct, professional manner, just so that his daughter will grow up learning from the best. Georgie also tries very hard to find a job immediately, as he has lost his job working for his grandmother at her illegal casino.
Georgie also knows that he has a family to take care of and a wife to keep happy, so he does what he has to do. Georgie makes it through his mother-in-law’s disapproval period, and he even proves to her that he really is a good father to her granddaughter and a good husband to her daughter.
At the end of Season 7, Gerogie knows he has to now become the man of the house after his father’s death. It isn’t easy for him, but he must mature quickly in order to take care of his loved ones.
Another character who goes through character development is Sheldon’s mother, Mary. She is a super religious, stay-at-home mom. But in Season 7, she goes back to working at the Church and reclaims her independence from the man of the house, her husband.
Mary’s marriage was finally calming down before George passed away, and there are almost no fights between them in Season 7. She “goes wild” when she is in Germany with Sheldon. She goes against her firm Christian beliefs and becomes drunk while at a bar. Mary is becoming more carefree, and she even encourages George to move the family due to a job opportunity.
Mary also makes her voice more heard in this season, as she is not afraid to correct her kids or lecture them. She yells at Sheldon for not coming to eat with the family, and it works out great for her because it gets through to him and he listens.
After her husband dies, Mary is really angry, and we have never seen her this angry before. She breaks apart at the lectern, when trying to say a few words at her husband’s funeral.
Mary had never broken down like this, and she had never been this bold with her emotions, but this event brings it out of her. This just goes to show that she loved her husband and wishes he had stayed with her, but she mentions that the hard times between them are finally over.
This series has a variety of personalities and characters, and they all go through a huge change in this final season. The ending of this show is a positive one, despite the tragic death of George.
Sheldon, Georgie and Mary have the most significant change in character during this season, due to their struggles and loss. That is what the season teaches us—that pain can strengthen a person and change their character for the better.
Make sure to check out the final season of Young Sheldon. You’ll be pleasantly surprised by how much these characters have grown.
