The Glendale High School Marching Band had its first competition on Saturday, October 19. The competition was held at Bellflower High School, and featured twenty-three marching bands from high schools all over Southern California. GHS performed their 2024 program, entitled “The Crown,” which they have been rehearsing since August.
In their division, they placed fifth overall, and fourth and third, respectively, in the categories of color guard and visual effect!
But what does this mean?
All competing bands are sorted into divisions depending on their size, and scored by a team of judges, each specializing in one of six different categories: visual performance, visual effect, music performance, music effect, percussion, and auxiliary (or color guard). A combination of these individual scores makes up the band’s overall score and determines placement. A more complete breakdown of the judging process can be found on the CSBC website.
Glendale’s fifth-place finish is a great start for the band, especially considering that their show is still a work in progress.
Our team’s final competition will be on November 9, at Gahr High School, where they will perform their show for the last time this year. It will also be one of the few times where all of the GUSD marching bands (including those from GHS, Crescenta Valley High School, and Hoover High School) will be attending the same competition!
As they prepare for their final run, make sure to support the Spirit of Glendale by coming out to watch their show during halftime at one of our last two home football games, the first of which will be this Friday at 7pm against Muir High School. We are so proud of our marching band for all their hard work!

Stay in step, Nitros!
