Cohen Lim is a senior at Glendale High School. He is a captain of our school’s cross country and Scholastic Bowl teams, as well as an assistant drum major who plays trumpet in the GHS marching band. He plays the cello and occasionally conducts our symphonic orchestra, and he is also a member of our boys’ varsity lacrosse team.
Cohen is the president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Club and the Tri-M Music Honor Society, and he volunteers at a youth group and hosts bible studies in his spare time. His hobbies include playing the guitar and the piano, writing music, and running, and when he has free time, he loves playing video games!

For Cohen, being able to see people grow, develop, and change is the highlight of his experience in marching band. Being an assistant drum major for the past three years has also helped him obtain and build leadership and other life skills. He really enjoys seeing others succeed, and he loves being able to watch, in real time, how the band has grown and developed since he was a freshman.
Cohen believes that our band has a lot of potential and hopes to see us place well in competitions in the fall, and he hopes that the members are just able to have fun as well. Cohen explained, “When I go to the stands sometimes and try to look at the drill, the sound is just amazing and gives me goosebumps.” It’s stunning for him to see the progress his fellow bandmates have made over the years, and he hopes to also have a really good last semester in the marching band.
Cohen said that his experience with conducting our symphonic orchestra was “a journey.” The orchestra has gotten smaller this past semester, but Cohen argues, “We’re small but mighty!”

The members of the orchestra have been playing a variety of music, and for Cohen, conducting is a whole new level. It involves figuring out how each instrument’s diverse part comes together with other instruments to create the piece as a whole. Conducting was also a great leadership experience for him, because the conductor’s job is not only to lead the orchestra but also to make sure that everyone stays together.
Scholastic Bowl has been another really fun experience for Cohen, and the skills he has learned there have also aided him in his own classes. He likes hanging out with people every day and getting to know them well. He finds that learning new facts isn’t typically very personal, but when it comes to Scholastic Bowl, that’s not the case. It’s quite special, and you get to bond with one another.
Cohen hopes that the GHS Scholastic Bowl team will come in first place this year, and he thinks they have a pretty good chance at winning. He also hopes that people are willing to carry on the legacy of the Scholastic Bowl after he graduates, so that younger people in the future are more willing to participate in it. He also hopes that the Scholastic Bowl will become a bigger event on our campus, as it goes unappreciated by many people.
In the end, Cohen is a senior involved in many different and diverse activities here at GHS, and he encourages younger students to try their hand at any club or sport that comes their way! If you are interested in joining the marching band next year, email Evelyn Cubas at [email protected]!
