The Met Gala is an annual fundraising event hosted by Vogue Magazine for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. This event is known for its exclusive guest list and all the crazy outfits that these guests wear.
Each year they choose a theme for the guests to follow and it doesn’t always go to plan. This year, the theme was “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style”, which was focused on “Black style over three hundred years through the concept of dandyism.” Some celebrities understood the assignment and some did not.
Celebs that Were on Theme
Laura Harrier (Zac Posen for Gapstudio)
American actress and model, Laura Harrier, showed up and showed out! She was giving a classy, elegant yet minimalistic look. Her cinched-in vest top created a sophisticated appearance, while the sleeves and pants gave effortless goddesses.
No excessive jewelry, hair, or makeup were necessary. She took the theme “tailored for you” seriously, while completely emobiding black dandyism! Thank you to the Met Gala for creating an outlet for Laura Harrier to look THAT good.
Damson Idris (Tommy Hilfiger)
Now THIS is what the Met Gala is all about.
Damson Idris, British actor and producer, did not come to play around! He not only pulled up to the event in an F1 race car, but he also showed up in a racing suit as well. He was zipped down, wearing a black red and white Swarovski crystal covered helmet. Only later did he change mid-carpet for a grand reveal of the finest red suit. He really did it all; the red was bold, empowering and not overdone. He really showed the other men out with this look. It was creative and elegant unlike many others. This is how men should be dressing! Enough with the boring suits!
Anok Yai (Thom Browne)
American model, Anok Yai, always fits the theme to a tea, but this year really stood out! Her outfit was AMAZING! Her gown represents Old Hollywood and looks like a suit turned into a ball gown. Her gloves add so much to the look of elegance. The simple jewelry and shoes made the gown stand out so much more. The silhouette is stunning and fits her perfectly. This gown, without a doubt, resembles the theme of “tailored for you.”
Jenna Ortega (Bailman)
American actress, Jenna Ortega, had a very poetic take on the theme “tailored for you.” When you first look at Ortega’s look, it feels very underwhelming, but as you take a closer look at it, you can’t help but feel surprised by how well it fits the theme. Ortega’s dress is constructed of literal metal rulers… yes, RULERS! I think that this is such a creative way to interpret this theme by complementing the tailor’s work. We love everything about this look, and it just fits the theme so well.
Celebs Who Could Have Brought More to the Table
Zendaya (Louis Vuttion)
American singer, songwriter and actress, Zendaya, wore a zoot-suit-inspired outfit, perfectly on theme. While we can see the inspiration behind it, the execution was just poor. She looks beautiful in an all-white suit but it’s just that: nothing more to the outfit.
There is always a risk to wearing all one color, and this was not the desired outcome. A huge missed opportunity was lost here, and she could have done a fun and brightly-colored suit. Her floppy hat fits the theme perfectly, but it was all far too simple, especially when comparing this outfit to her previous looks. There is a large lack of wow factor, which is important when it comes to Met Gala fashion.
Lana Del Rey (Valentino)
Boring is the only way to describe this look. American singer, Lana Del Rey, loves to put her own spin on the themes of the Met Gala, but maybe she shouldn’t do this anymore. This gown was taken off the Spring 2025 Couture Fashion runway, and it just shows that Lana didn’t really have the energy to really fit the theme. The dress is just a dress, and it’s not anything special. You would see this on any other red carpet. I think for The Met you have to put in the wow factor and Lana did not.
Rosé (Saint Laurent)
And the crowd is silent. Rosé, the New Zealand-South Korean singer/songwriter, left an intriguing impression. Her outfit was too much, while also being nothing at all. The pants and suit are completely lost, due to the large and lengthy sleeves. It’s baggy but in all the wrong places, as if it was thrown together at the last minute.
The color black is elegant, when done right, and we can see where the stylist was going with this outfit. Each piece is beautiful, but all together it just looks boring. The pop of blue from the necklace is absolutely stunning, and the red shoes are adorable, but there was no cohesiveness to this outfit. Unfortunately, Rosé didn’t meet the standards or the theme.
Lisa (Louis Vuttion)
Everyone was highly anticipating the appearance of K-pop sensation, and Rosé’s Blackpink bandmate, Lisa, and honestly it was not a bad outfit. Her look was designed by Pharell Williams and it was perfectly on theme. There was a bit of controversy around her outfit as people thought Rosa Park’s face was embroidered on her undergarments, BUT this was not the case.
Lisa’s outfit had women’s faces embroidered all over her outfit, so it was wrong for people to assume that she was disrespecting an African American icon. This created a lot of negative talk around her look, when it was a good outfit that was on theme. There is no way that Pharell would purposely do this to her.
Overall, the Met Gala theme allowed for some jaw-dropping outfits to be displayed, but some just missed the mark. The fashion here is always hit-or-miss, making it an event that is always fun to watch. Stay superfine, Nitros!
