The 2004 film Troy, directed by Wolfgang Petersen, was a huge box office success. It revolves around one of the most known stories in history, Homer’s Iliad, and it had an enormous price tag and a well-known cast, including Brad Pitt and Orlando Bloom. However, most people complained about this film when it came out. Despite being a financial hit, Troy failed to meet the expectations of audiences for multiple reasons.
The fact that the film significantly changed the original plot of the epic poem was one of the primary problems. Troy lacks the concept of gods and goddesses helping in the fight, which appears in The Iliad. The movie made an effort to be more accurate and human-centered. This was upsetting to fans of the original story, since the mythological part is what makes it so special.
The characters and their actions are another problem. Brad Pitt’s version of Achilles is boring and he doesn’t express enough emotion, even though he is a famous actor, especially in the 2000s. The relationship between Paris (Bloom) and Helen (Diane Kruger) also doesn’t seem very convincing enough, which makes the reason for the war look weak.
At times, the movie also feels long and slow. The movie stalls since many of the scenes are just people standing around talking. Although there aren’t enough of them to keep up the challenge, there are some dramatic battle scenes, like Achilles’s meet up with Hector (Eric Bana). Some viewers may find it hard to stay focused, since the movie doesn’t feel as exciting as they were expecting to see a movie about a huge, epic war.
While I respect the movie’s beautiful sets, stunning costumes, and intense fight scenes, the film lacks emotion. You just won’t care about the characters or their challenges, and it all feels empty. People want a story like this to have more emotion and drama, but Troy just doesn’t hit the mark
In the end, Troy is a flop because it is too slow, has weak characters, and strays too much from the original plot. It might be appreciated for its action and appearance, but it won’t live up to your expectations.
