Hiroki Roberts is a senior at Glendale High School and currently serves as president of the GHS Tri-M Music Honor Society. He has been playing trumpet for eight years and used to play the piano. Hiroki is also a member of our school’s marching band, our Speech and Debate Club, and our school’s Scholastic Bowl team. In his free time, he enjoys playing Pokemon, practicing on his trumpet, and occasionally browsing YouTube. He will be attending UCLA in the fall.
Hirkoi is serving his first year as president of Tri-M, but he served as vice president last year. He has been a member of this club for three years, and his role was passed down to him by GHS alum and former drum major Diya Singh.
Tri-M is an honor group for music students, who have been playing their instrument for a long time, are receiving good grades, and have been enrolled in a music class for at least a semester.
Essentially you should apply for this club if you are interested in playing music, volunteering, and helping others. In addition, this group usually plays during the Pat Navolanic Memorial Award Assembly assembly at the end of the school year.
Tri-M members will gain leadership skills. They may volunteer by helping students who are just beginning with their instrument or by playing at school and extracurricular events, such as performing the national anthem at football games.
This organization isn’t only limited to GHS students, as there are different branches at other schools, like Crescenta Valley High School. Unfortunately, Hiroki has not yet been able to collaborate with them, but he hopes to do so in the future.
Applications for the Tri-M Music Honor Society are only open twice a year, once in the fall and again in the winter. This year there has only been one application window, due to a decision made by the selection committee.
The application process is fairly simple. You choose a solo piece of music, record it, and submit the video. The committee then reviews your video and decides whether or not you’ve been accepted into the club. The requirements are that you must be enrolled in a GHS music class for at least one semester and have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA.
Membership in this group will look amazing on college application because as an honor society, it is considered more prestigious than other clubs. If selected, you can add this to your college resume and demonstrate the things you have done to contribute to the group.
If you’ve been playing your instrument for a while and want to help others develop their skills, you should apply to be a part of this amazingly talented group of young musicians. Look out for the next application window this fall and submit your video application! Hiroki hopes that you will have the passion to continue spreading the gift of music to others around campus.
