If you’re into indie rock, garage rock, post-punk revival, punk rock or alternative rock, then you’ll love Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not, the debut album from the band Arctic Monkeys. Released January 23th 2006, every song was written by Alex Turner, the band’s main vocalist. This album has thirteen tracks, and none of them sound the same. Each song has something different and that’s what makes it unique.
This album has been certified eight-times platinum in the United Kingdom. The Arctic Monkeys’ debut song on the album was also number one on the UK singles chart for a whole week.
One of my favorite songs on the album is “From the Ritz to the Rubble”. It’s a fast paced song, and it has a small story in it, and that’s the main reason it’s one of their best songs. It’s basically a story about a man who goes to a club, but the bouncer won’t let him in and a whole fight breaks out. According to the website Genius.com, the lead singer “may be describing his journey through the lines at The Ritz to the rubble, when a bouncer decides to ‘give him a duff.’” It’s just a fun song to sing while you’re driving in the car or just anywhere.
A different song that I like from this album is “I Bet That You Look Good on the Dancefloor”. It’s another upbeat song, and it’s also very fun to sing along to. This track is about dating a girl who’s always tired and lacks interest in everything, and the singer is wondering how she’d look on a night out, which is referred to in the song’s title.
Another terrific song is “Mardy Bum”, which is not very fast-paced. This track is more of a melancholy song, because it’s about how this guy’s girlfriend is acting moody and uncooperative. The song is basically an argument about how she has changed throughout their relationship. He reminisces about how different she used to be, how kind and loving she was, and he’s asking her why they can’t be how they used to be.
So if you’re looking for songs to put in the car on blast, and pretend you’re a 19-year-old in the UK, this is the album for you. And don’t forget to listen to the other songs by the Arctic Monkeys, as they are all equally good.
