In her final season with the Glendale High School girls varsity soccer team, senior center back Nelia Ranjbar has shown true leadership by guiding her team with care and determination. She has worked hard on the field and has always been there to support her teammates. Her steady and kind presence has made a big difference for everyone.
Nelia’s impact goes beyond the soccer field. By always encouraging others and stressing the importance of working together, she has helped build a close-knit team. Her lessons on teamwork and staying positive will live on, even now that her time with the team is over.
What made you start playing soccer?
I’ve been playing since I was eight years old. My brother always played; after every game, he’d get snacks for the team. I always wanted to get those snacks, too, so that’s literally why I joined.
What has being a team captain taught you about leadership?
Being captain taught me to be a role model and to set an example for everyone on the team. When I lead by example, it helps set the tone for every practice and every game.
What has been the biggest challenge for the team?
We’re a very young team; most of the players are freshmen. Getting everyone confident and ready to play at a higher level has been the biggest challenge.
How has soccer shaped your experience at GHS?
Soccer has helped me get more involved with the school and build a second family on this team. The connections I’ve made here are truly special.
What will you miss most about playing for this team?
I will miss the friendships I’ve made and the opportunity to travel with all my friends. These experiences have enriched my life in so many ways.
What advice would you give to the younger players on next year’s team?
Just keep having fun. When you put too much pressure on yourself, you lose sight of what matters in the sport.
As Nelia’s final season comes to a close, her dedication and guidance continue to inspire her teammates long after she has stepped off the field. Her legacy as a senior captain is a testament to her leadership, resilience, and the enduring impact of being a role model, both on and off the pitch.
