Chihiro Okubo is a senior at Glendale High School, and she is the founder of the Pediatric Cancer Awareness Club. In addition to her leadership, she is an active member of the GHS dance team and enjoys being involved with clubs and other campus activities.
The journey of Chihiro’s club began with a Girl Scouts project focused on pediatric cancer. This inspired her to create the Pediatric Cancer Awareness Club to further spread and sustain her advocacy on campus.
This club is dedicated to raising and donating funds to the Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center, where Chihiro has spent time volunteering. Beyond financial support, the club strives to spread awareness about pediatric cancer and encourages students to engage in meaningful service opportunities.
Club members participate in a variety of activities, including creating posters and flyers to raise awareness, wearing colors that represent Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month in September, attending meetings and organizing future fundraisers that involve sales booths to raise money. Chihiro also hosts informational slides to educate her peers on pediatric cancer.
For Chihiro, the most enjoyable part of being president is creating a strong sense of community. She finds joy in bringing people together to support a shared mission. Whether members join because they’re passionate about pediatric cancer, or simply because they seek a strong community, the club provides a welcoming space for everybody.
As Chihiro prepares for graduation, her hope for this club is to remain an important part of GHS. She sees it as a special project that represents awareness, community and sustainability. Looking ahead, she plans on attending college to further pursue her education.
