Senior Leora Freeman is president of the Girls Athletic Association at Glendale High School. She was born in Santa Monica and was raised in Glendale.
Leora says that one special thing about our city is that the community supports everyone and always involves others. She believes that there are people in Glendale that are relatable and supportive.
In her free time, Leora enjoys playing club water polo, going to friends’ houses, and watching movies and TV shows. She has played volleyball throughout her sophomore and junior years, and she has been competing in water polo and swim since freshman year.
Leora’s water polo practices are fun, competitive, and very social. Above all, these sessions relieve her stress and allow her to think clearly and calm herself down. She is especially grateful to her teammates, because they are all so close. Leora says she and her teammates all get along well and consider each other as family.
Leora says she’s a big procrastinator, but balancing both academics and water polo requires her to plan ahead. “I always think about the future,” she said. “For example, if I do my work ahead of time, I won’t have to stress myself or feel overwhelmed into doing my work last-minute.”
Leora’s friend, Lori Libarian, was the first to come up with the idea for the Girls Athletic Association, and when Leora was allowed to be president, she took it. Club members all participate in a variety of different sports. The club was made to bring both girls and sports together, and Leora hopes to create a community of female athletes.
The Girls Athletic Association is centralized around girls, but it is meant to support all GHS athletes. Leora wants to bring the Nitro athletic community together and teach both equality and sportsmanship. Everyone in the Girls Athletic Association will be a collective team, and members will go to each others’ games to be there for one another.
Overall, Leora is both an athlete, a scholar and a leader, and she wants to spread sportsmanship on our campus. She is an amazing president and a key part of our athletic community.
