Grown Ups is a 2010 American comedy film, directed by Dennis Durgan, written by Adam Sandler and Fred Wolf, and starring Sandler as one of the main characters.
The movie follows five close friends, who were on the same basketball team in high school, when they reunite for a Fourth of July holiday weekend after their coach’s unfortunate death. When they come together, these friends rediscover old bonds and reconnect with each other, after years of living their own separate lives.
This movie’s biggest asset is its humor, and it was very ahead of its time. Although this film is meant to make people have a good laugh, and it doesn’t seem to have a lot of depth and story behind it, it does have a message. It shows the importance of family and the bonds, the faith and the trust you must have in them.
The more you watch this movie, the more the conflicts start to unravel. Family problems, such as lies, trust issues and arguments, are things that everyone in the movie goes through after some time, and this is very true-to-life.
The best parts of this film are all the wacky shenanigans that the characters get themselves into. It’s like they grew up without ever leaving their childlike instincts, which is basically the main idea of the movie.
Another thing to appreciate is how the actors who play these characters don’t even need to exaggerate or alter who they are on the screen. They are quite literally playing themselves.
My favorite character in the movie has to be Lenny, played by Sandler. This is not just because he’s one of the main people in the story, but it’s because you see how his experience at the cabin changes his perspective on his own family the most. Lenny and his wife learn to respect each other’s separate ideas and views by the end of the movie.
Overall, this movie is really decent. Its sole purpose is to let the audience have a good time. Just in case you didn’t know this already, you’re going to be watching an Adam Sandler film, so you can expect some crude jokes.
And if you are interested, you should check out some of the other movies written by and starring Adam Sandler. There are a lot of heartfelt movies with more story to them, if this one isn’t for you.
