Aulani Vinas is a seventeen-year-old senior at Glendale High School. Although her family is from the Philippines, she was born in Los Angeles.
Aulani enjoys playing video games, spending time with friends, and reading books. She is also an ASB Commissioner, and she is currently serving as the president of the GHS Filipino Club.
What is your favorite aspect of Filipino culture?
My favorite aspect is the people, how we laugh with each other and have fun.
And the food is nice.
What is something about your culture that makes it unique?
The food is something that makes our culture unique. Also our rich cultural heritage. Our spirit is also something that makes us unique.
What made you continue this club at GHS?
I was very involved last year and I just loved participating and having fun with everyone. It inspired me to use this year to support and celebrate our beautiful Filipino culture as a president.
How do you feel about being the president of this Filipino club?
I feel excited because I like to share my happiness with other people. And I feel like this year [will] be fun and happy.
What is your favorite part about being a club president?
I like how I can be in control, but also [see] my club members having fun, and [see] the hardships that I thought about with my cabinet members.
What happens during club meetings?
During club meetings, we can discuss our Filipino culture and how it started. We’re also going to have potlucks and fun activities to do.
What plans or goals do you have for this club?
I hope this club can have more people so that the Filipino culture can be more out in the school. It’s a mix of everyone, but I want people to know [more about our] culture.
Why should GHS students join this club and how would this benefit them?
Students should join this club because it’s just fun in general to learn different people’s cultures, backgrounds, and languages. I feel like the benefit is you’re more into other people’s culture and what they do, how they express themselves, and [their] different body communications.
Aulani is hopeful that the Filipino Club will continue next year, “because there are a lot of people wanting to be presidents.” After she graduates from GHS in June, she hopes to attend one of the UCs, and she plans to become a nurse.
