This album tells stories of how some of Carpenter’s shortest relationships have affected her. Although this album is labeled as simple pop music, she dives into other genres, like country, disco, and R&B-type beats. Her single “Espresso” previewed what was to come on this album. Expectations were high and Carpenter has not disappointed.
Now, if you know anything about Sabrina Carpenter, she is very witty with her humor, so her lyrics are, too. This album is beautifully composed, both lyrically and musically. Her voice is so velvety that it makes you want to listen to this album over and over again. Because of her Short n’ Sweet Tour, her fans have been enjoying several new hits.
The title track “Taste” is a song that her fans think is about her relationship with Shawn Mendes. The music video only added to the suspicion that Jenna Ortega is portraying Camila Cabello, who went back to Mendes right after his breakup with Carpenter.
Besides the speculations of what the song is about, “Taste” really gets into your head. The rock-style guitar in the background during the chorus adds more of that catchy feel. This is such an exciting song to start off the album.
“Sharpest Tool” is a ballad that is relatable to many of Carpenter’s fans, and that’s why it’s such a fan favorite right now. It has a very melodic, creative pre-chorus. Whenever Carpenter ends a line, the next line starts with the last word she just sang. She declares, “We were goin’ right, then you took a left. Left me with a lot of sh** to second-guess. Guess I’ll waste another year on wonderin’ if, If that was casual, then I’m an idiot.” These lyrics, along with the background vocals and musical production, really all flow together into a slightly upbeat ballad.
“Coincidence” is a very funky and playful song, even though it’s about sneaky cheating. When the guitar starts playing, you might think that this is going to be a country tune. But after listening to the whole song, you realize that the guitar is just adding to the playfulness.
As the song progresses, the guitar grows faster, and as the song slows down for her vocals to pop, so does the guitar. Plus the background vocals make it seem like Carpenter is gossiping to her friends about her partner, which makes this song stand out a bit more.
“Juno” is such a cute love song, that’s also very upbeat. It was also a highly anticipated performance on her Short n’ Sweet Tour, as she switches up playful poses each night.
This song showcases Carpenter’s witty personality and humor. She sings, “I showed my friends, then we high-fived. Sorry if you feel objectified.” You also rarely see big words like “objectified” included in pop songs so casually.
If you listen closely enough, Carpenter manages to fit lots of big words into her songs. You hear “camaraderie” in “Bed Chem” and “prematurely” in “Good Graces”. But this is typical of most of Carpenter’s music, and fans enjoy how her large vocabulary flows into her songs.
This album is so beautifully put together, as Carpenter explores many different genres, and I love how her voice perfectly vibes into each one. This album is so, so, so amazing! You should give it a listen right now (or I’ll cry)!
