Mia Gonzalez is a senior here at Glendale High School, and she is the ASB President. She has been a part of our ASB for three years, and she initially joined this program during her sophomore year, because she wanted to be more involved with the school. She said, “It’s enjoyable being ASB President, because now I am very involved with the school, and I hope to plan a lot of stuff in the future!”
When she first joined ASB, Mia was nervous that she wouldn’t have as many opportunities and friends. But, she stepped out of her comfort zone and followed her path. Mia is happy that she didn’t let the fear inside of her win out, and she joined ASB during her sophomore year.
Mia has made a lot of friends in ASB, including the closest friends that she has ever had. “I feel like I am going to be with them for the rest of my life,” she claimed. She has also learned a lot from the advice she gathered from her senior friends in ASB last year.
When cooperating with other ASB members, Mia has found that making everyone happy is the hardest part of working together. Sometimes people are going to have disagreements, so she makes sure to listen to them. During meetings, she wants all members to feel free to voice how they feel about each situation. Mia doesn’t want anyone to feel that they aren’t able to express themselves, because ASB should feel like a welcoming environment for everyone.
Mia’s advice for future ASB members is that they shouldn’t be afraid to allow themselves to be seen. “That’s one thing that you can’t do,” she said. “Even if it’s hard, you have to just put yourself out there and get to know people.”
Mia also suggests that if ASB members don’t feel comfortable doing something, like dressing up for Spirit Week, they should make someone else feel comfortable. They should always be the first ones to step out of their comfort zone and help someone else.
A fun fact about Mia Gonzalez is that she has always loved public speaking. She has been on many student voice panels, for both the District and at GHS, so she has always been comfortable in the public eye. Whenever there is a public speaking opportunity, she is always the first one to volunteer for it, since she feels it is important to have a say in what goes on at GHS.
If Mia were to offer one word about how it feels to be a part of ASB, she would say it is very family-like. She loves that she and her members can talk about and work on a lot of activities together!
